In August 2005, Hurricane Katrina slammed ashore along the Gulf Coast of the United States, sweeping out to sea the resident dolphins of the Marine Life Oceanarium in Gulfport, Mississippi.
Though this landmark institution was completely destroyed, two dolphin families found their way through the devastation into the Gulf of Mexico. Following their rescue, these 16 dolphins were given a new home at Dolphin Cay, a state-of-the-art habitat with expert marine mammal care.
Under the watchful, around-the-clock eye of Dolphin Cay’s expert Marine Mammal Specialists, the “Katrina Dolphins” have made a remarkable recovery. In 2007, their family expanded, welcoming three baby calves.
